April 24th 2004 saw the inaugural running of the Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown Park. Offering over £100,000 in prize money, the feature race was won by the Martin Pipe trained Puntal, with the 25/1 outsider just holding off the challenge of the Paul Nicholls trained Royal Auclair in a breathtaking finish. The Feature race of a fantastic two days, Betfred will continue sponsorship of the Gold Cup for at least the next two years. Betfred chairman Fred Done was delighted with the response from all areas of the racing fraternity, saying 'What a fantastic two days, the weather was lovely and the racing was fantastic. This raises the bar for sports sponsorship in the United Kingdom. Our Competitors had better get used to it. Next year will be even bigger.'. The Bonuses Fred immediately added a BetFred Bonus King stamp to the meeting by offering a potential £1 million bonus for horses attempting to win the BetFred Gold Cup, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National. The bonuses are as follows:
- £250,000 for any horse to win both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the BetFred Gold Cup
- £250,000 for any horse to win both the Grand National and the BetFred Gold Cup
- £500,000 for any horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Grand National and the BetFred Gold Cup
