- Three horses had been first past the post but subsequently disqualified - Proud Tarquin in 1974, Cahervillahow in 1991 and Givus A Buck in 1993.
- Newcastle hosted the 1973 Gold Cup (won by Charlie Potheen) whilst the new grandstand was being built at Sandown.
- Only three horses have ever started at odds of less than 9-4 (Arkle 4-9 won in 1965, What A Myth 5-4 won in 1966, Mill House 6-4 second in 1964). Eleven favourites have won but only two since 1981.
- Four amateur jockeys have won the race: Mr John Lawrence (now Lord Oaksey) on Taxidermist (1958); Mr Francis Codd on Drumlargan (1983); Mr Marcus Armytage on Mr Frisk (1990) and Mr Rupert Nuttall on Harwell Lad (1997).
- Most wins as a trainer: Fulke Walwyn who has won the race seven times with Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1967), Charlie Potheen (1973), The Dikler (1974), Diamond Edge (1979 and 1981), Special Cargo (1984).
- Most wins as a jockey: Ron Barry who won the race three times in four years from 1971-74.
- Stan Mellor, Josh Gifford, David Nicholson and Richard Rowe have all won the race as both jockeys and trainers.

- Arkle is the only horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Sandown Gold Cup in the same season (though Pas Seul, Mill House, What A Myth, The Dikler and Desert Orchid all achieved the feat in different seasons).
- Mr Frisk is the only horse to win the Grand National and the Sandown Gold Cup - he did so in the same season in 1990. He won the Sandown Gold Cup by eight lengths, the largest winning margin.
